President Donna Swanson-Hurtado will participate in the International Affairs Seminar the end of April, one of a select group invited.

"The AFT needs leaders who understand the international work of our union and have a deep awareness of the new challenges that face the labor movement and democracy. As an AFT leader, you recognize the need to be aware of emerging issues in education, healthcare and the public sector. Just as importantly, AFT leaders must be aware of the emerging global issues that have an impact on workers, unions and democratic societies, such as globalization, the internationalization of education, and new challenges emerging as part of the war on terror. These are the kind of issues that will be discussed during the International Affairs Seminar, with presentations from experts in international affairs, terrorism, defense, globalization and other topics."

"The AFT has always stood with teachers and others around the world struggling to build strong unions and stable democracies. We have a proud history in the struggles to promote human and labor rights, to expand the rule of law, and to promote greater peace and security around the world. We will explore this history and the seminar, and examine the lessons from it to deal with the challenges now before us."
